Background information:
Town signs indicate where the urban area of a town begins or ends. In the Netherlands these signs were already placed in the '30s. Even today each municipality has its own model of signs, and it even happens that one town has several types of signs.
Architectural details:
The town sign has been blue with white letters since the '30s, though the color blue has become lighter over the years. Furthermore, it is currently being attempted to position the town sign at about 2.5 meters above ground level.
Around the turn of the century the galvanized poles were replaced with yellow, white or blue U-shaped frames in which a few additional signs can be placed. Think of red and white reflective stripes and possibly an integrated speed sign.
