More information

Background information:
In the Twente countryside are salt sheds found in large numbers. Sometimes alone and sometimes standing in clusters. The typical green or brown houses accommodate a pump with which salt is mined. The principle of salt mining is for years and years the same. Water is fed down in order to solve the underground rock salt and as brine is pumped up again. The brine is led through a pipe system to the factory, where the purification takes place.

Architectural details:
Because the equipment to carry out drilling used to be much larger, the old derricks were a lot higher than the present salt sheds. In earlier times these drill towers were everywhere in the woods and fields. Over the years, the majority is replaced by this small salt sheds. The new salt cottages are built in "Saxon style", complete with roof sign (also known as “makelaar”), so they fit well in the Twente countryside.
